Damian's Art Gallery I Gender Based Violence

Gender-based violence remains a deep-rooted problem South Africa. Often, when we see the news, there is a report of a female who has gone missing or has died as a result of women's abuse.

Some artists use paintings to pass on a message or communicate with world as a whole. The GBV is identified in many forms, victims of gender based violence can experience trauma in sexual, verbal, emotional or financial abuse by their perpetrators. This type of abuse usually occurs by someone known by the women who is a family member or a boyfriend or spouse.

GBV is a term used to describe violence directed at an individual based on their gender. This violence includes verbal, emotional, sexual, physical and psychological abuse. Although both men and women experience GBV, the statistics in South Africa show that most of the victims are women and girls.

At Damian's Art Gallery we are encouraging you to support this movement to raise awareness that we are totally against this inhuman.

Damian's Art Gallery I Xenophobia

Azuri Muhuli, a 24 year old Congolese refuge, has been living in South Africa for 16 years and has been both a victim of and a witness to attacks on immigrants in Durban.

He was at school when he realised that he could communicate with other learners through drawing even if he could not speak their languages. “This is when I realised that art is a universal language that can be understood by anyone and everyone. My friends all adored my drawings and would pay me to draw their favourite wrestling superstars.”

Wild Life, it’s a term that forms the foundation of literally thousands upon thousands of safari bookings each year, but the Big 5 is nevertheless a concept that many first time visitors to Africa are unaware of. Or if they have heard of it, they are unaware of its origins.

It consist of the following animals

Lion: The biggest cat in the jungle with the loudest roar that can be heard from 8km away and they fear no other animals as they are always in a pride.

Leopard:  The fastest animal in the jungle and also it is the member of the cat family, with their golden and spotted bodies yet with ferocious hunting technique. They are carnivores and always solo.

Rhino: The oldest group of mammals, virtual living fossils and an  important source from ecotourism.

Buffalo: A large, heavy cow-like animal. They vary greatly not only in size but in the shape of their horns and their coloring, adults are usually dark gray or black and the younger ones are often reddish-brown. Both male and females have heavy, ridged horns that grow straight out from the head or curve downward and then up. The horns are used as weapons against their predators.

Elephant: Are the largest land mammals on earth and have distinctly massive bodies, large ears and long trunks. They use their trucks to pick up objects, trumpet warning, greet other elephants or suck up water for drinking or bathing amongst other things.

At Damian's Art Gallery, we welcome all the artists to come and showcase their wild life findings in a paint.
